Job Description

Job Title: Surgical Technologist Profession: Nursing Specialty: Surgical Technologist, OR Technologist Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Tuesday - Friday Hours per Shift: 10 Experience: 1 year preferred License: High School Diploma or GED Certifications: Surgical Technologist Certification (CST), Current BLS certification Must-Have: Must have or obtain flu vaccination. Must have certifications at the time of submission. Must submit 2 professional references. Description: Scrubs in on surgical procedures under professional nurse supervision for various advanced and complex types of surgeries. Anticipates the surgeon's preferences for certain materials or instruments and responds to these preferences in advance. Updates the Nurse as necessary based on continuing assessment of equipment needs and physician preferences. Demonstrates sound clinical judgment and adaptability to changing patient needs. Sets up sterile table with instruments, equipment, supplies, and medications/solutions needed for surgical procedures. Takes apart and reassembles any instrument or piece of equipment that needs cleaning within the scope of instructed nursing personnel duties and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Monitors supplies and instruments to assure sterility of materials used, furthering quality assurance of patient care. Inventories and monitors assigned service supplies and orders as needed. Develops and implements educational programs and learning aids for the area or department, including in-service classes and special projects. Provides input regarding the need for changes in policies, procedures, and patient care standards. Offers backup call for emergency cases that may require two surgical technicians. Participates in assigned committees. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology with appropriate instrumentation, suturing materials, needles, prosthetic devices, and other supplies is necessary. Understanding of wound healing and complications is required. Knowledge of normal growth, development, and life cycle changes, including physical and behavioral characteristics of individuals for which nursing care is provided, is important. Skills in sterile technique and processing, as well as patient positioning, are essential. Ability to handle requests made during surgery is necessary.
