Job Description
Duties * You will Assist in the operation, maintenance and repair of Naval tugs and crafts assigned to the Navy Region Northwest, Port Operations. * You will perform light rigging when required. Operate deck cranes, winches capstans, and fire equipment. * You will be responsible for the proper handling of towing lines, and safe operation of deck equipment. * You will see that it that lines are properly tied to docks or floating plant which tug is tending. * You will function as a line handler for arrival and departure of vessels. * You will relieve the Captain in the pilot house during certain operations. * You will navigate and maneuver tugs alongside certain objects including barges and docks. * You will perform maintenance of vessel mechanical systems, deck machinery, and painting preservation. * You will perform daily checks of oil boom, including cleaning and repairs. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal. * Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing. * You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift. * Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs. * You will be required to perform occasional sea duty. * The position often requires irregular hours. Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. My experience includes performing tasks involved in the maintenance, general upkeep, and deck operations a small craft which may include assisting in docking and undocking; line and cable handling; operating deck cranes, winches capstans, and firefighting equipment; maintaining deck machinery and equipment, and chipping/sanding and painting of vessel. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection.
