Position Overview: Terra Remote is growing! We're excited to expand our IT team with a brand-new position: Systems and Data Management Specialist. We're looking for someone who’s naturally curious and thrives on problem-solving. In this role, you'll play a key part in ensuring the integrity, security, and efficiency of our data lifecycle. As the organization scales, you'll also help plan and implement server expansions, upgrade storage pools, and even build new servers from the ground up. You’ll work closely with our Desktop Support Technician and report directly to the Head of IT. The ideal candidate will bring a strong blend of systems administration and data management skills. This position will begin as 100% in-office, with the potential to transition into a hybrid role as you grow with the team Responsibilities: Reporting to the IT Supervisor, the successful candidate is responsible for: Data Archiving & Asset Management o Maintain structured records of project status, disk usage, and task progress using tools such as databases, dashboards, and Jira. o Ensure timely, documented backups and manage archival processes, including efficient data retrieval. Track and manage physical and digital storage assets to maintain accuracy and accountability. Systems and Server Administration: o Perform routine updates and maintenance on our Linux and FreeBSD servers. o Assist in the administration of our hybrid Active Directory (AD) and Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) environment. This includes managing group policies, security groups, and user permissions. o Administer and maintain our Microsoft 365 environment, including user accounts, licensing, and core services. Security Management: o Investigate and respond to security alerts and phishing emails. o Assist in maintaining system security by applying patches and implementing best practices on servers. Job Requirements · Related degree or program of study. · Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated experience with consistent and clear updates to both team members and management and also in creating documentation. · A solid understanding of IT principles and security best practices. · Technical Proficiency: Strong skills using the terminal in Linux/FreeBSD and Windows Servers to quickly and efficiently retrieve system information. You must have experience with scripting and automation to streamline repetitive tasks. · Ability to use an organized and methodical approach to prioritize and work efficiently with multiple demands. · A personal interest in geography and the world of digital mapping is a ‘nice to have’ too. · Ability to work evening and weekend shifts on occasion. Experience · Systems Administration (Linux/FreeBSD, Windows Servers): o 2–4 years of hands-on experience managing and maintaining server environments, including updates, patching, and performance monitoring. · Active Directory & Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD): o 1–3 years of experience administering hybrid identity environments, including group policies and user permissions. · Microsoft 365 Administration: o 1–2 years of experience managing user accounts, licensing, and core services. · Scripting & Automation (Linux/Windows): o 2–3 years of experience writing and maintaining scripts for automation, preferably in Bash, PowerShell, or Python. · Data Lifecycle & Archiving Management: o 2–4 years of experience in data archiving, backup scheduling, and retrieval processes, including inventory control of digital and physical assets. · Security Monitoring & Incident Response: o 1–2 years of experience investigating security alerts, phishing attempts, and applying security patches. · Project Documentation & Communication: o 2 years of experience creating clear documentation and communicating effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Job Classification Location: Mills Rd, North Saanich, BC Job type: Full-time 40 hours per week Paid sick and vacation days, wellness fund, tuition reimbursement and benefits. Wage: $60,000 to $70,000 per annum depending on experience. This position is eligible for overtime.
