Description of Position: Responsible for maintaining the sterile field in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection. Required to assist the surgical team as the sterile member who passes instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery. Assists with prompt turnover of surgical cases, case setup and proper care of surgical instruments and equipment. Performs delegated patient care duties. Receives direction from: RN - Operating Room Circulator, Surgical Providers, Anesthesia Providers, Operating Room Charge Nurse, and Director of Surgical Services. Gives direction to: Sterile Processing Instrument Technician Basic Great Falls Clinic Performance Criteria Completes CORE requirements. Employee maintains current certifications required for the position. Is knowledgeable of compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance. Essential Function: Patient care a) Transports and positions patient on table, covers with sterile drapes Essential Function: Maintains operating room before and after procedures a) Prepares and maintains sterile surgical field b) Checks, adjusts and operates equipment needed for surgery c) Ensures all necessary supplies and equipment are available for cases, communicates with instrument processor to ensure availability of instrument sets d) Labels all medications on sterile field e) Cleans and restocks the operating room Essential Function: Assist during procedure a) Handles, assembles and passes instruments safely b) Prepares, cares for and disposes of specimens taken for lab analysis, holds retractors, cuts suture and applies dressings as directed c) Communicates with surgeon if any special items are needed for the procedure d) Shares responsibility in counting sponges, needles and instruments when needed Essential Function: Effective use of equipment/workspace a) Demonstrates correct use of any and all equipment during procedures b) Follows OSHA standards for PPE and Universal pre-cautions c) Washes instruments and assists in various types of sterilization procedures d) Assists in keeping operating room and surgery areas clean, safe and organized e) Uses Clinic equipment for business purposes only Essential Function: Prepares for procedures appropriately a) Scrubs hands and arms b) Puts on sterile operating room attire c) Keeps knowledge current with new procedures, techniques and equipment Essential Function: Communication a) Utilizes effective verbal skills in communicating with nursing staff, medical staff and supervisors b) Assists with learning needs of students and orientees Disclaimer: This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that required of the employee.
