Job Description
- Supports the NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Office of Aerospace Medicine and Occupational Health Branch physicians to carry out projects and assignments.
- Writes and Monitors Emergency Medical Services (EMS) plan for KSC
- Supports crewed space launch activities
- Develops and monitors simulations to keep launch team readiness in order
- Provides mentorship and evaluations of visiting resident and medical student education
- Supports crew quarters and astronaut launch activities, as requested by NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) and KSC medical operations.
- Support human research within other NASA-approved areas, as requested.
- Participate and fulfill roles as described in the EMS Plans during missions
- Coordinate Spaceflight Medical Operations checklist items
- Serves a Point of Contact (POC) and leads in various capacities for mission-related meetings
- Interact with other agencies on behalf of Kennedy Space Center NASA
- Supports RehabWorks, Occupational Health Clinic and Aerospace Medicine with medical administrative duties as a delegate of authority for Occupational Medical Director, as required
Required Clinical Abilities
- Examines patients and determines appropriate radiological imaging and clinical laboratory tests
- Interprets test results, evaluates examination findings, formulates, patient management plans, and communicates such to the patient and appropriate NASA representatives
- Determines the need for and assists in specialized medical care and treatment
- Performs physical examinations as part of the pre-employment, periodic and occupational health surveillance programs
- Maintains currency in Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support or equivalent (i.e., Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support)
- Maintains familiarity with all emergency procedures and applicable medical operating instructions, policies, and instructions.
- Maintains a full working knowledge of applicable medical standards
- Provides medical care with limited equipment, supplies, and personnel at remote sites as required
- Provides diagnosis and care based on medical history, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests
- Directs patient-care activities of nurses, technicians, and other assigned staff
- Prepares and reviews case histories and obtains data through interviews
- Refers to private physicians those injuries or illnesses, which will require time off from work, specialty medical care, or extended follow up
- Monitors exercise electrocardiographic testing as part of the physical examination program
- Serve as interface with local private physician for referral of patients and interchange of information important to patient health and safety
- Maintains familiarity with all emergency procedures and medical operating instructions and policies
- Assists in active implementation of company initiatives to ensure compliance with OSHA VPP, ISO, JCAHO and other mandated regulatory or conformance regulations/standards
- Performs other assigned departmental operations to maintain workflow
- Must possess excellent communication skills
- Must be able to perform well in a team environment
- Participant in KSC Medical Education Programs
- Manages and coordinate functions to provide 4-wk rotations to medical school students and residents
- Provide lectures in pertinent topics
- Provide facility briefings
- Act as mentor to students and residents
- Provides oversight with projects initiated by students and residents
- Provides evaluations at the end of the rotation
- Research capacity (as needed and with NEMCON/NASA concurrence
- Serves and supports Biomedical Research Lab
- Initiates research projects that fit within the scope of the mission
- Produces abstracts and papers to support relevant research
Education/Training:
- MD/DO degree from an accredited Medical/osteopathic school
- Residency in Aerospace Medicine or related field (EM, IM, FP)
- Minimum of three years experience in the field Aerospace medicine, Occupational Medicine and/or Emergency Medicine. Previous experience as a Flight Surgeon preferred
Licenses/Certifications/Registrations:
- Physicians providing Aerospace Medicine services shall meet all State of Florida Licensing requirements and can be licensed in any U.S. State initially. State of Florida medical license
- BLS, ACLS
- Board certification preferred
Supervisory Responsibilities:
May be requested to manage Aerospace nurses, office administrator, and/or other clinical personnel, as designated.
May be requested to serve as the Delegate of Authority for the Occupational Medical Director, as designated.
Working Conditions:
Ability to work without limitations or restrictions in varied conditions, including indoors, outdoors, climb stairs lift/carry 30lbs, provide medical care in a pre-hospital setting and fly in helicopters
Must thrive in a team atmosphere and effectively work with all levels of employees
General office environment
Periodic on-call schedule in support of manned space missions
May require lifting of patient-loads and bending for confined spaces
Complies with all Company safety policies and site-specific safety procedures
Participates in and supports the NEMCON safety program
Ensures safe operating conditions within area of responsibility
Identifies potential hazards, concerns, and safety incidents and reports to supervisory personnel.
