Job Description

Minimum requirements for the role: Must have a diploma or bachelor's degree in a Production Field or 5 years relevant experience Certification in feed processing or extrusion technology is highly desirable Minimum 35 years experience in feed mill operations, with at least 2 years experience in extrusion processes (soybean or similar oilseed processing preferred) Proven supervisory experience in a poultry or animal feed production environment, ideally in sub-Saharan Africa In-depth knowledge of soybean extrusion (e.g., dry extrusion for full-fat soybeans), feed formulation, and quality control testing; familiarity with extruder machinery (e.g., twin-screw systems) and related equipment like grinders, coolers, and pelletizers Strong understanding of poultry nutrition, including how extruded soybeans improve digestibility and performance in broilers and layers Experience with inventory management and production scheduling is advantageous Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team, with excellent communication and training abilities Problem-solving skills for troubleshooting process inefficiencies Attention to detail, commitment to safety and quality, and adaptability to a fast-paced farm environment Basic proficiency in English and Chichewa for team coordination The successful candidate will be responsible for: Supervising daily operations of the soybean extrusion line, including grinding soybeans, operating extruders (high-temperature, high-pressure processing at 82171°C), cooling, and pelletizing to produce extruded soybean meal for poultry feed. Working hands-on with operators and technicians, assigning tasks such as equipment monitoring, raw material handling, quality sampling, and basic maintenance to ensure production targets are met. Monitoring and optimizing extrusion parameters (temperature, pressure, moisture) to maximize protein bioavailability, energy content, and digestibility while minimizing waste and energy use. Ensuring compliance with feed quality and safety standards, including regularly testing for anti-nutritional factors, nutrient profiles, and contamination; implementing sanitation protocols to maintain hygiene in the feed mill. Troubleshooting equipment issues, coordinating with maintenance teams for repairs, and recommending improvements to extrusion processes for efficiency and sustainability. Managing inventory of soybeans and extruded products, tracking usage to support just-in-time feed batching for broiler and layer rations. Training staff on safe extrusion practices, biosecurity, and poultry feed formulation principles to uphold animal welfare and environmental standards. Reporting production metrics, downtime, and quality data to the Feed Mill Manager; contributing to budgeting, capital projects, and process upgrades. Promoting a safety-first culture, conducting risk assessments, and enforcing protocols in line with Malawi's labor and agricultural regulations.
