Role About the role The Head of English Language Support will be responsible for the foundation and overall leadership of the EAL, Preparatory Course Primary, and Preparatory Course Secondary programmes. The aim is for pupils to develop English language skills and access the English National curriculum. The successful candidate will promote a caring and happy atmosphere throughout the EAL, PCP & PCS programmes, focusing on curiosity, confidence and kindness. He or she is expected to recruit and lead a team of outstanding teachers and teaching assistants who share this ethos, and to manage department resources to provide effective learning opportunities. What you will be doing Leadership Lead and manage the day-to-day operation of the intensive programme for pupils with beginner-level English proficiency (Preparatory Course Primary & Secondary) and the less intensive EAL programme for intermediate proficiency. Support the Head of College in delivering the school vision and be an active member of the Senior Leadership Team. Line manage, mentor and coach the Leads of both programmes. Ensure effective performance of all EAL teachers and teaching assistants through staff development. Provide strategic direction, quality assurance, and overall management of Whole School EAL provisions. Demonstrate financial acumen in budget management and resource deployment. Marketing and Admissions Collaborate with Heads of Marketing and Admissions to recruit pupils for the EAL & PCP Programmes. Develop events with the teaching team to attract new pupils. Attend marketing and admissions events as required and advise on admissions policies to identify EAL needs prior to entry. Assess prospective pupils and provide appropriate parental feedback. Explore and design EAL provisions to increase pupil recruitment and revenue. Education Develop curriculum for PCP, PCS and EAL Programmes with SLT and Team Leads, ensuring high standards. Evaluate curriculum effectiveness, maintain assessment and record-keeping systems, and oversee INSET for staff to improve practice. Create Individual Development Plans for pupils below age-appropriate English levels. Monitor academic progress across beginner to proficient levels; oversee pastoral welfare and co-curricular programmes where applicable. Ensure staff understand EAL needs and plan lessons accordingly. Lead CPD activities and opportunities to share best practice. Communication & Engagement Maintain relationships with current and prospective parents; report to the Head of College on EAL matters. Participate in consultative procedures to ensure effective communication between departments. Meet with prospective parents to explain EAL/PCP aims, methods, facilities and pupil progress. Encourage parental involvement in their child’s progress and foster school-home partnerships. Regularly inform parents of progress and participate in governance and liaison with the Governors as required. Coordinate with the School Nurse, Operations Director, Catering Team and local partners as needed; publish and review EAL policy and procedures; run parent workshops on EAL. Assist staff in communicating with parents and the wider community about EAL practices and ensure inclusion collaboration. Support the Inclusion team with effective working relationships across staff. Administration Exercise budget control for the Department and design timetables to balance a suitable curriculum and accommodate specialist teachers. Recruit and appoint new staff in consultation with the Head of College. Attend parents’ evenings, school functions, and staff/curriculum meetings; participate in the appraisal process; lead occasional whole-school assemblies. Ensure policies (including Parent Handbook) are accurate and up-to-date; oversee annual review distributions to families. This is not an exhaustive list; the successful candidate may be required to undertake additional duties. Who we are looking for At least five years’ teaching experience in a similar capacity or as an experienced subject leader with a strong EAL provision. University degree and teaching qualification from a recognised institution. Essential qualities: team player, warm and engaging with pupils and parents, determined, strategic thinker, able to lead an outstanding team, inspiring to pupils and staff, self-reliant, resilient and adaptable.
