Job Description

Overview FAO is seeking a Fishery Officer (Aquaculture) to support the Sustainable Aquaculture area of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI). The position is based at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. Organizational Setting The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) is responsible for the economic, social, institutional, governance and policy aspects of FAO's activities related to fisheries and aquaculture and their development, with emphasis on human well-being, food security and poverty reduction; post-harvest utilization, marketing and trade; and the management and conservation of living aquatic resources. The division focuses on biodiversity and ecosystem maintenance, responsible fisheries and aquaculture standards, and the development of aquaculture technology while protecting the environment and the well-being of stakeholders. Reporting Lines The Fishery Officer (Aquaculture) reports to the Senior Fishery Officer in the Sustainable Aquaculture area, under the supervision of the Deputy Director, NFI. Technical Focus Support the Sustainable Aquaculture area in organizing the COFI Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and implementing policies and programmes to maximize aquaculture's impacts on Members' economic, social and environmental objectives. Emphasis on the role of small-scale aquaculture in food security and nutrition and alignment with FAO's SDGs and Strategic Framework, including Blue Transformation and the Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA). Key Results Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics; provision of project/meeting services to support programme projects and services. Key Functions Collects and analyses relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology-related information, data and/or statistics to support programme projects and services. Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports, and edits/revises technical/scientific documents. Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems. Updates databases and web pages. Participates in multidisciplinary project/work teams. Collaborates in developing training tools and materials and organizing workshops/seminars. Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings and conferences, development/production of materials and support to partners. Specific Functions Supports normative work of the Sustainable Aquaculture area, including COFI Sub-Committee on Aquaculture, Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Aquatic Genetic Resources, and alignment with the GSA and COFI-related activities. Supports advancement of land-based and marine aquaculture to enhance food security, poverty alleviation and rural development. Assists in preparing aquaculture projects and implementation plans for the Blue Transformation Roadmap (2022-2030). Provides technical backstopping, capacity building and training, monitoring and reporting for project implementation. Supports implementation of aquaculture development programmes in less-developed areas, including Africa and Small Island Developing States. Promotes cross-cutting initiatives to improve food security and nutrition, resource-use efficiency and environmental protection while reducing climate vulnerability. Supports development of communications materials, documentation of good practices, knowledge products, and proposals for mobilizing extra-budgetary resources. Organizes meetings, workshops and seminars. Minimum Requirements Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in biology, fishery science, aquatic sciences, environmental science, aquaculture economics and management, international relations and affairs or related discipline. Three years of relevant experience in aquaculture research, planning and development, aquaculture technology, biosecurity, environmental impact assessment and/or management, aquaculture economics or related field. Working knowledge of English and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish). Experience planning and implementing research and development programmes in aquaculture. Ability to raise awareness and mobilize resources for aquaculture projects and programmes. Conditions of Service Extension of fixed-term appointments is based on performance and availability of funds.
