Job Description
Job Purpose To ensure all manufactured, fabricated, and assembled components and structures meet specified quality standards, customer requirements, and relevant South African National Standards (SANS) and codes. The role focuses primarily on mechanical inspection and welding quality, requiring a meticulous eye for detail and a firm commitment to upholding the company's quality management system. Key Responsibilities Inspection & Testing: Perform in-process and final inspections of mechanical components, fabricated structures, and welded assemblies. Conduct visual inspections (VT) of welds to ensure they meet required specifications. Interpret and apply acceptance criteria based on engineering drawings. Perform dimensional inspections using precision measuring equipment. Verify material certifications and material identification against project requirements. Welding Inspection: Monitor welding processes to ensure adherence to approved WPS. Check pre-heat and interpass temperatures as required. Identify and report welding defects such as porosity, undercut, cracks. Liaise with the welding team to address quality issues. Documentation & Reporting: Accurately complete inspection and test reports (ITRs), quality control checklists, and non-conformance reports (NCRs). Maintain detailed and traceable records of all inspections performed. Report any non-conforming products, materials, or processes to the Quality Manager. Assist in the closure of NCRs by verifying corrective and preventive actions. Compliance & Standards: Ensure all inspection activities are performed in compliance with the company's Quality Management System. Stay updated on changes to industry standards, codes, and inspection techniques. Calibration & Equipment: Ensure all measuring and test equipment used is within its calibration due date and is used correctly. Handle inspection equipment with care and report any faults immediately. Minimum Requirements Qualification: N3 Certificate in Mechanical Engineering. Certification: Level 1 Welding Inspection Certification (CSWIP 3.0 / SCWI Level 1 or equivalent SAIW certification). Experience: A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in a quality inspection role within a mechanical fabrication, manufacturing, or heavy engineering environment. Preferred Requirements (Advantageous) Knowledge of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods (e.g., Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT). Experience with ISO 9001 QMS requirements. Computer literacy in MS Office (Excel, Word) for report writing.
