Job Description
Organisation/Company Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica Department Advanced materials metrology and life sciences Research Field Engineering » Electrical engineering Researcher Profile First Stage Researcher (R1) Positions PhD Positions Country Italy Application Deadline 1 Oct 2025 - 23:59 (Europe/Rome) Type of Contract Temporary Job Status Full-time Offer Starting Date 1 Mar 2026 Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme? Horizon Europe - MSCA Marie Curie Grant Agreement Number 101226760 Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No Offer Description This PhD project forms part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network MAGNIFY: "Advancing Energy Conversion Technologies: High-Frequency Magnetics in Modern Power Electronics", https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101226760 The MAGNIFY project aims to address the growing challenge of the accurate modeling of passive magnetic components, subjected to the fast-switching of modern power electronics. The topics are: 1) tailoring and characterising magnetic materials; 2) developing new efficient multiphysical and multiscale models; 3) holistic design of energy converters. Host institution: Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRIM), Strada delle Cacce 91, 10135, Torino, ITALY. The National Metrology Institute of Italy (INRIM) is a public scientific research body carrying out research in metrology, advanced measurement standards and related technologies. It currently has around 300 employees. The sector Magnetism, Materials and Spintronics has about 20 research scientists and several post-Docs, PhD candidates and master students and is focused on the research on the magnetic properties of materials, thin films, multilayers, nanoparticles and nanolithographic devices. PhD enrolment: Politecnico di Torino (POLITO), C.so Duca degli Abruzzi 24, 10129, Torino, ITALY. Politecnico di Torino (established in 1859, the first Italian Engineering School) is rated among the top European technical Universities for education and research. With 38700 students and a teaching staff of more than 1000, POLITO has currently 1785 PhD candidates. The candidate will be enrolled in the PhD programme in Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering. The PhD Project. In the PhD project the candidate will: 1) Conduct broadband magnetic measurements (from DC to MHz) on various materials like amorphous and nanocrystalline, soft ferrites, and soft magnetic composites, under both sinusoidal and DC-biased induction regimes. 2) Develop physical models for magnetic losses at high frequencies (MHz), building upon the statistical theory of losses. 3) Advance the physical modelling of high frequency losses in both conducting and non-conducting materials, examining the role of skin effect and spin damping. 4) Investigate the influence of DC-bias on the loss response of magnetic cores. International collaboration is central to this project. The candidate will undertake secondments to: 1) CERTH (Greece), Preparation and structural characterisation of ferrites (Month 10-12, ). 2) ALTHIR (France) Design of magnetic cores with developed hysteresis models in ALTAIR simulation software.(Month 30-32) Candidate profile. We are seeking highly motivated candidates to pursue research work in this field, holding a master’s degree in electronic/electrical engineering or physics (not already in possession of a doctoral degree) - that have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date. - with attitude to work in a collaborative international group environment and - with excellent English proficiency (speaking, listening and writing). Interested? Send by email (email subject: MAGNIFY-DC3): - A concise CV - Transcripts of your Bachelor and Master - Two references (letters or names that we could contact) - Any other document such as: scientific publications or a summary of the master thesis Deadline for receiving the email applications: 1 October, 2025. - A mobility allowance to travel abroad and finance your secondments. - Specialized doctoral training to boost your expertise at POLITO - Opportunities to collaborate in groundbreaking interdisciplinary research and participate in international conferences. - Access to state-of-the-art INRIM and POLITO research infrastructures Eligibility criteria Requirements to be admitted to the POLITO Doctoral School (that will be requested at the second stage) - M.Sc. degree (i.e. 2° 2nd-level title, as defined by the Bologna Process), issued by an officially recognized academic institution, which grants admission to PhD programmes in the country of issuance: Bachelor's degree (official transcript of records, syllabus/course description), Master's degreeor official university document stating provisional date of graduation - if not graduated yet, (official transcript of records, syllabus/course description). The relevant university shall issue the documents (Italian, English, French, or Spanishare accepted). The original diplomas and transcripts should be available by 31/01/2026 at the latest (or before enrollment to POLITO). - English language certificate. One of the following certificates of English language knowledge, regardless of the date of obtainment: The certificate should be available by 31/01/2026 at the latest Selection process The selection process will take place in three subsequent steps: 1) MAGNIFY selection of the candidates eligible for this MSCA position.
