Job Description
This is a holistic vessel management role where you'll have complete accountability for assigned offshore support vessels. You'll be empowered to drive performance standards while ensuring vessels remain compliant, seaworthy, and operate within budgetary parameters. Core Responsibilities Vessel Operations Management Take full responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of assigned offshore support vessels Ensure all vessels remain "In Class" and comply with SOLAS, IMO, Flag State, and Port State Control requirements Monitor and manage vessel performance through senior officers, driving the highest standards of safety and operational excellence Oversee all mechanical, electrical, and navigational systems to ensure safe and efficient operation Review electronic engine room logs and continuously monitor vessel condition Budget & Commercial Management Operate assigned vessels within set budgets and provide weekly budget performance analysis Proactively identify and communicate potential budget variances to stakeholders Control procurement of vessel spares, stores, and contract services in partnership with supply chain teams Ensure cost-effective operations while maintaining safety and performance standards Maintenance & Dry-Docking Work closely with special projects teams on dry-dock planning Ensure timely completion of dry-dock specifications and coordinate with procurement teams Maintain planned maintenance systems and defect reporting systems both onboard and shore-based Update defect reports within one week of port calls and maintain project job reports throughout maintenance periods Port Call Management Manage comprehensive port call operations ensuring all scheduled work is completed safely and on time Provide advance warnings to vessels regarding port call work and attending contractors Ensure all Permit to Work (PTW), isolations, risk assessments, and method statements are properly implemented Exercise "Stop the Job" authority when unsafe practices are observed Maintain detailed port call reporting for each vessel Regulatory & Compliance Liaise with Classification Societies, Port State Control, and Flag State representatives Manage survey schedules and coordinate one-off surveys and inspections Ensure full compliance with environmental legislation and company IMS policies Actively promote and progress company HSEQ policies Team Leadership & Development Monitor performance of vessel officers and engage with senior ship's officers on performance management Drive onboard team performance through appointed senior officers Implement procedures for dealing with poor or unacceptable performance Support crew development and maintain high professional standards Emergency Response Provide out-of-hours service support as required Participate in Emergency Response Team activities when needed Exercise "Stop the Job" authority in safety-critical situations What We're Looking For Essential Requirements Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency or equivalent qualification Relevant offshore support vessel experience - understanding of OSV operations is crucial Previous experience in similar technical management role preferred Strong understanding of maritime regulations (SOLAS, IMO, Class requirements) Experience with planned maintenance systems and budget management Excellent communication skills for dealing with crews, clients, and suppliers Personal Qualities Ability to work independently and take ownership of decisions Mature, professional approach with strong leadership capabilities Tenacity to work to tight deadlines and under pressure Strong analytical skills for budget management and performance monitoring Excellent verbal and written communication skills Team player who can also lead effectively Desirable Experience Previous technical superintendent or similar shore-based experience North Sea operations experience Knowledge of offshore industry commercial practices Experience with emergency response procedures Dry-docking and major project management experience What Our Client Offers Genuine Empowerment Real authority and responsibility for vessel operations Trust to make decisions with full management backing Direct impact on vessel performance and commercial success Exposure to strategic technical planning and fleet management Professional Development Clear progression opportunities within established offshore operator Exposure to full spectrum of technical management challenges Support for further professional development and qualifications Opportunity to influence company technical policies and procedures Competitive Package Excellent salary reflecting seniority and responsibility of role Performance-related bonuses tied to vessel performance Comprehensive benefits package including pension and healthcare Modern office facilities in Aberdeen Flexible working arrangements where operationally feasible Industry Stability Established operator with strong market position Long-term contracts providing operational stability Investment in modern vessel fleet and shore-based facilities Commitment to safety and operational excellence
