Kitchen Assistant

Job Title: Kitchen Assistant Location: Childrey, Wantage (OX12), OX12 9RG Reports to: Head Chef Hours: Agency Work Salary: Up to £13 per hour Job Summary: As a Kitchen Assistant, you will support the catering team in preparing, cooking, and serving meals to residents in accordance with their dietary needs. Your role is crucial in maintaining hygiene standards and contributing to the overall wellbeing of residents by ensuring meals are prepared in a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. Key Responsibilities: Assist in the preparation and serving of meals, snacks, and drinks according to menu plans and individual dietary requirements. Support the cook/chef in basic food preparation such as chopping, peeling, and plating food. Ensure all kitchen areas, equipment, and utensils are cleaned and sanitised in line with food hygiene regulations. Wash up dishes and kitchen equipment after use. Receive and correctly store food deliveries following the first in, first out stock rotation method. Help maintain accurate records for food temperatures, fridge/freezer checks, and cleaning schedules. Assist in maintaining a clean and organised kitchen environment that meets Health & Safety and Environmental Health standards. Follow all care home policies and procedures including infection prevention and control. Be respectful, discreet, and friendly with residents while working in the care home environment. Requirements: Previous experience in a kitchen or food service role. Basic Food Hygiene Certificate (or willingness to obtain). Good understanding of food safety and cleanliness standards. Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team. Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays. Strong communication skills and a caring attitude towards older people. Desirable: Experience in a care home or healthcare setting. Knowledge of dietary needs such as diabetic, low-salt, or allergen-free diets.
