Job Description

Location: Taunton, Somerset Contract: Full‑Time, Permanent Salary: Leadership Scale (Negotiable based on experience) A respected secondary school in Taunton is seeking a driven and compassionate Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to lead their SEND department from September 2025. This is a strategic leadership position integral to ensuring that pupils with additional needs receive excellent support across academic, social, and emotional domains—without becoming an Assistant Head role. Role Overview * Develop and lead strategic direction for SEND provision, including EHCP compliance and effective deployment of specialists * Line-manage the team of teaching assistants and SEND staff, ensuring high-quality training and deployment * Work closely with SLT, teaching staff, parents, and external agencies to create inclusive practices that meet student needs * Monitor SEND student attainment and progress, using data to inform plans and report outcomes to governors and parents * Oversee budget decisions related to SEND provisions, equipment, and staff deployment Candidate Profile * Qualified SENCO with statutory accreditation or equivalent experience in secondary provision * Significant SEND leadership experience, strong knowledge of current SEND legislation and best practices * Excellent interpersonal skills, able to influence change and collaborate effectively with wider teams * Organised, resilient, and committed to championing inclusive education School Culture & Provision * A caring and collaborative community with an inclusive ethos * Well-resourced SEND facilities and integrated support across all school areas * Strong pastoral structures and commitment to pupil wellbeing * Wide range of support including counsellors, external professionals, and targeted intervention groups Leadership & Development Benefits * Leadership coaching and dedicated time for SEND strategy planning * Opportunities to take on school-wide responsibilities beyond SEND provision * Access to national SEND networks and CPD workshops * Competitive salary aligned with Leadership Pay Scale How to Apply: If you’re a strategic and compassionate SEND leader committed to high standards and inclusion, submit your CV and leadership statement detailing your SEND experience and vision for inclusion
