Summary of Duties
This entry-level position with experience can lead to higher certifications and greater opportunities for the right person who wants a career in the water treatment field. Performs technical work supporting municipal water pumping and treatment plant operations, including routine inspections and maintenance of water plant equipment, sampling and analysis of water samples, and monitoring of water flow meters.
Shift Information: This is a night shift position in this fashion: Week 1, Sunday through Wednesday 03:30 p.m. to 03:30 a.m.; Week 2, Sunday through Tuesday 03:30 p.m. to 03:30 a.m.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Checks water flow and pressure readings at designated times and records readings according to established procedures;
- Checks and records hydraulic and electrical demand readings, monitors pressure charts and tank elevations to ensure the maintenance of pre-determined levels;
- Gathers and performs laboratory testing on water and sludge samples at various stages throughout the water treatment process for pH, chlorine, iron, alkalinity, hardness, carbon dioxide, ammonia, polyphosphate, nitrate, suspended solids, and calcium levels for operational control and regulatory purposes; other analysis as required; makes operational adjustments as necessary;
- Maintains chemical levels for treatment;
- Changes out gas chlorine cylinders (1 ton), operates gas chlorination equipment;
- Monitors, inspects, maintains, cleans, and repairs pumps, filters, air compressors, chemical feeders, lime slaking units, and other plant equipment to ensure systems are in proper working condition;
- Performs general maintenance of plant facilities to maintain a safe and clean working environment including cleaning floors, bathrooms, kitchens, and windows, removing trash, mowing grass, and other related housekeeping activities;
- Maintains records, logs, and related items associated with daily activities, runs reports on operation and consumption activities utilizing paper and computerized applications;
- Monitors and maintains appropriate levels of supplies and materials in support of water plant operations and activities;
- Provides comprehensive customer service, including delivery of accurate, prompt and courteous assistance to internal and external customers, both verbally and in writing;
- Assists with special projects and performs other similar duties as assigned;
- Operates water wells and water pumps.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent;
- Must possess a valid Driver's License
- Promotions will be based upon experience and Missouri Department of Natural Resources water certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
- Proficiency in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and simple mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios, etc.;
- Working knowledge of computers utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel, SCADA and other applications;
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the proper industrial safety practices with special regard to working below grade or in confined places, high voltage areas, and/or areas involving heat, offensive odors and dampness, including the practical application of first aid techniques;
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, sampling and analytical analysis of water samples;
- Ability to safely utilize various chemicals used in the water treatment process such as gaseous chlorine, lime, carbon dioxide, and other reagents;
- Knowledge and skill in performing inspections of water treatment equipment in a competent manner, reporting deficiencies to supervisory personnel;
- Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with customers, co-workers, and representatives of other agencies;
- Must be able to work under adverse conditions, such as small spaces, underground spaces, or climbing water or chemical storage towers;
- Ability to read and interpret maintenance and operations manuals, plans, diagrams, drawings, blueprints, schematics, etc.;
- Ability to effectively work under pressure during an emergency;
- Ability to work independently;
- Ability to think analytically and apply sound judgement, solve problems, make effective decisions, and act with integrity;
- Ability to use sound judgement to detect unusual, harmful, or emergency situations and act accordingly;
- Ability to comprehend, process, and apply both verbal and written skills appropriate to the job;
- Ability to consistently demonstrate sound ethics and judgement;
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries;
- Ability to use City resources effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to perform shift work to include designated days, nights, weekends and holidays.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Other Requirements
- May be required to climb or balance, each with hands and arms, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk and hear, smell, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel;
- Works primarily in an indoor/outdoor environment with exposure to weather-related heat and cold, rain, wind, snow, and related elements;
- May be exposed to working in close quarters, high and precarious places, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, and infectious diseases;
- May occasionally be required to lift/move up to 100 pounds, and heavier materials with assistance and/or equipment;
