Summary of Function: The AGS Alternative Education Teacher reports directly to the Vice Principle of Special Education. The Alternative Education Teacher will administer daily lessons for students provided by the classroom teacher. The Alternative Education teacher is expected to seek direction from the classroom teacher and Methods and Resources Department or Vice Principle of Special Education when faced with out of the ordinary situations. The incumbent is responsible to teach our Mi’gmaq students in a holistic, two-eyed seeing approach to bring goals, standards, and objectives that are set forth by Alaqsite’w Gitpu School and LED Educational Standards. They will use specialized techniques, which will include cultural practices, traditions, and provide instruction in identified academic, cultural areas which meet individual and group needs of students who have been unable to succeed in the general classroom environment. The incumbent will work with students who may need behavioral support or a different learning environment. Job Duties: Maintain a professional image and demeanor with all employees, management, executives and visitors at all times. Create a supportive and culturally affirming classroom environment where students feel valued, respected, and empowered to succeed academically and personally. Incorporate Mi’gmaq perspectives, knowledge, and teachings into lesson plans and activities, fostering pride in cultural identity and promoting holistic wellness. Provide differentiated instruction and individualized support to meet the diverse learning needs and strengths of Mi’gmaq students. Provide individual mentoring to students when needed. Knowledge of Elementary and Secondary Education Curriculum Promote Mi’gmaq culture and values in the classroom. Monitor student progress, assess learning outcomes, and provide constructive feedback to facilitate continuous student improvement Ensuring that students’ individual interests and goals are being met Participate in Special Educational Team meetings when necessary, involving assigned students. Facilitate re-entry into the classroom. Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Education and/or Provincial Teaching Certificate Strong knowledge of Mi’gmaq culture and community. Must provide a Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check. Extensive knowledge and understanding of First Nation needs, issues, concerns and aspirations.
