Senior Technician

Job Description: We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Senior AV Technician & Technical Manager to join our team in Johannesburg. This role requires a hands-on professional with in-depth technical knowledge of AV equipment and a strong background in event production, technical team management, and client service. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in the planning, execution, and successful delivery of events, ensuring technical excellence and exceptional client experience. Key Responsibilities: Technical Operations Oversee and operate technical equipment for events including audio, video, lighting, and rigging. Configure sound systems and select appropriate audio equipment for various event formats. Select and operate lighting fixtures based on event type and environment. Understand and apply correct video configurations, including screen ratios, projection distances, and lens selection. Determine when to use LED screens vs projectors for optimal results. Plan and manage the rigging of trusses and ensure safe installation of technical equipment. Project & Event Management Assess event technical requirements based on client brief and event scope. Provide technical quotes including gear, crew, logistics, and transport. Manage the technical planning, preparation, and execution of live events and roadshows. Liaise with clients pre-event and onsite to ensure expectations are met. Source, coordinate, and manage freelance technicians as needed. Team & Equipment Management Lead and manage the technical crew on-site and during event setup/strike. Supervise the Warehouse Manager to ensure proper maintenance and readiness of technical equipment. Maintain and expand the database of preferred freelance crew. Administrative & Software Tasks Create floorplans and technical layouts using AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks. Confidently edit client presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint. Use Microsoft Excel and Office Suite for budgeting, planning, and internal reporting. Requirements: Technical Skills & Experience Proven experience as a sound technician, lighting operator, and video technician in the live events industry. Solid understanding of projection systems, LED screens, and technical rigging. Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks for event layouts. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint. Management Experience Experience managing technical crews and coordinating freelance staff. Experience overseeing warehouse operations and technical equipment maintenance. Strong project management capabilities with a client-centric approach. Personal & Logistical Requirements Must reside in Johannesburg. Own reliable transport and cell phone. Willingness to work on weekends and extended hours when required. Willing and able to travel for roadshows and on-site events.
