THE ROLE This position is part of the Horizion Europe project AIRCARE. This is an Innovation Action dedicated to the advancement of technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) diseases. The aim of the project is to assess these novel technologies through clinical trials, i.e., through tests involving human patients. In this context, the Biomedical Robotics Lab of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) is seeking to appoint a highly motivated full-stack software engineer to build end-to-end applications for AIRCARE’s medical technologies. The Biomedical Robotics Lab is the coordinator of AIRCARE. We are part of the Advanced Robotics Research Unit, directed by Prof Darwin Caldwell. This large department focuses on an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to robot design and control, and the development of novel robotic components and technologies for applications in medical, surgical and rehabilitation robotics, exoskeletons and force augmentation, manipulation and dexterous manipulators, telepresence and teleoperation, industrial automation and robotics, active perception and learning, inspection robotics, hyper-redundant robots, robot dynamics and robots for hazardous environments. Our team is a multi-disciplinary group, where researchers from a range of scientific and engineering backgrounds collaborate to create novel solutions to key problems in robotics. Specifically, the Biomedical Robotics Lab, coordinated by Dr. Leonardo De Mattos, focuses on research and development of human-centered medical robotic technologies, including technologies for disease detection, diagnosis and surgery, assistive user interfaces, telesurgery, and general healthcare. The selected candidate will join AIRCARE’s consortium and work in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and surgeons. He/she will contribute to novel enhancements, validation, deployment and clinical testing of the following AIRCARE technologies: 1) computer-assisted disease detection and diagnosis systems (CADe/CADx); 2) robotic laser microsurgery; 3) SmartProbe tissue characterization system. This will mainly involve the design and implementation of intuitive user interfaces and of robust backend applications for the integration of AI modules and devices. The goal of this position is to contribute to the development of software applications written with clean, reusable, and maintainable code, while optimizing application performance and respecting medical device software standards.
