Planning Lawyer (local authority)

Service Care Legal are seeking an experienced and motivated Planning Lawyer Locum to join a well-regarded local authority legal team in North London. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified legal professional with solid experience in planning and local government law to work in a flexible and supportive environment. The role will require attendance at the office one day per week, with the remainder of the work conducted remotely. Key Responsibilities Provide legal advice and support on a wide range of planning, highways, and local government matters (contentious and non-contentious). Draft and negotiate Section 106 agreements , unilateral undertakings , highways agreements , and other related documentation. Attend Planning Committee meetings , offering legal guidance and representation as required. Advise on the legal implications of decisions, including reviewing and drafting reports. Manage contentious planning matters , such as planning appeals and judicial reviews . Attend project meetings for major developments, liaising with internal and external stakeholders. Instruct and brief Counsel and manage external legal providers where appropriate. Keep abreast of legal developments and provide training or updates to relevant stakeholders when required. Ensure effective use of case management systems and adherence to practice management standards. Person Specification Qualifications Qualified Solicitor , Barrister , or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (England & Wales). Minimum of 3 years' post-qualification experience (PQE) in relevant areas of law. Essential Experience Strong working knowledge of planning law , highways law , road traffic regulations , and local government law . Proven experience in: Drafting and negotiating planning and highways agreements. Advising on planning and related legal issues. Handling contentious matters, including appeals and judicial reviews.
