Staff Software Test Engineer The Role: Illumina Lab Services (ILS) has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Software Test Engineer to join the software team. Youll join a highly motivated team of software and test engineers that work closely with other teams across ILS, including bioinformatics and lab operations. The culture is collaborative, process-driven and fast-paced, and follows an Agile Scrum development methodology. Day-to-day activities involve much of the development lifecycle including requirements reviews, defining and reviewing test cases, executing tests, developing test automation and producing verification evidence and reports. The role also has scope for supervising and line-managing staff in the future. The role would suit a motivated, curious and detail-oriented test engineer with a track record of delivering customer-focused software within a regulated environment. Scope of Responsibilities: Applies advanced wide-ranging experience and professional knowledge to provide solutions in creative and effective ways. Directs the application of existing principles and guides development of new policies and ideas. Understands the interrelationships of different disciplines. Works on complex assignments where problem solving requires in-depth evaluation of varying factors and practices/procedures must be determined. Enhances internal and external working relationships and networks with key contacts outside area of expertise. Adapts style to differing audiences and frequently advises others on complex matters that relate to the wider business and require persuasion. May train and mentor junior level staff. Work is reviewed upon completion and is consistent with departmental objectives. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Responsibilities: Create and review test cases and test plans to ensure verification coverage of software requirements. Execute test cases and produce verification evidence and reports. Review software requirements and designs to maintain alignment with user requirements. Develop and review automated test code and scripts. Perform system and client application testing using both manual and automated testing methods. Ensure identified bugs are recorded, tracked and verified. Be an advocate for our SDLC and ensure that software is verified in compliance with our quality management system and medical device standards. Occasionally provide technical assistance to escalated operational issues. Assist with recruitment activities, including CV review and interviews. Scope to broaden role to include line-management in the future. Requirements: Experience of creating test cases from software requirements. Detailed knowledge of different software testing methodologies and when to apply them. Experience of testing REST APIs and Web UIs. Experience of automated test development using Python and Selenium. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable at the Linux command line. Experience with staff line-management including, but not limited to, goal setting, 1:1s and performance reviews. Desirable: Experience of software verification within a regulated environment, ideally to medical device standards. Use of Jama and Jira for requirements management. Experience of version control using Git and GitHub. Foundation ISEB / ISTQB Certification in Software Testing (or equivalent). Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher in a scientific subject. Experience / Education: Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelors degree; or 6 years and a Masters degree; or a PhD with 3 years of experience; or equivalent experience.
