The Big Data Infrastructure team at Disney Streaming is in search of a Principal Software Engineer who will be a vital addition to our Big Data Infrastructure team. The ideal candidate for this role should have a proven track record of working on mission-critical infrastructure, demonstrating expertise in building and maintaining large-scale data systems that can handle diverse requirements and substantial storage needs. What You'll Do


  • Develop, scale, and enhance in-house and cloud-based big data systems, including but not limited to Hadoop-related technologies (e.g., Spark, Flink, Presto, HDFS, Hive), Kubernetes, EMR, EKS, Glue, and IAM.
  • Explore and evaluate new big data technologies, and apply them to enhance Disney Streaming's production environment.
  • Engineer next-generation cloud-based big data infrastructure for batch and streaming data applications while continually improving performance, scalability, and availability.
  • Address architectural and design considerations, focusing on performance, scalability, reusability, and flexibility.
  • Promote engineering best practices, including the use of design patterns, code review processes, and automated unit/functional testing.
  • Collaborate closely with other engineering teams to influence their approach to big data system design and optimization.
  • Define and lead the adoption of best practices and streamlined processes within the team.
  • Work efficiently with Product Managers and fellow developers to develop data stores as a service.
  • Collaborate with senior internal team members and external stakeholders to gather requirements and drive implementation.


What To Bring


  • Bachelor's degree in a computer science-related field.
  • At least 10 years of professional programming and design experience.
  • 7+ years of experience with big data. Proficiency in one or more open-source big data systems, including HDFS, Yarn, HBase, Hive, Spark, Flink, Presto, Kubernetes, etc. You should be able to customize at least one of these systems at the code level.
  • A willingness to dive deep and become an expert in one or more big data systems, including a readiness to contribute to open-source software systems by fixing bugs, adding new features, improving performance, and giving back to the community.
  • Strong technical passion, exceptional problem-solving skills, a results-driven attitude, and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.


Nice To Haves


  • Master's degree in a computer science-related field.
  • xperience in building in-house big data infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in developing and optimizing Hadoop-related components (e.g., HDFS, HBase, Yarn, Hive, Spark, Flink, Presto, Impala).
  • Demonstrated ability with cloud infrastructure technologies, including Terraform, K8S, Spinnaker, IAM, ELB, and more.
  • Experience in managing a big data cluster with over 1000 nodes.


The hiring range for this position in Seattle, WA is $189,300 to $253,800 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
