CAD Designer I

General Summary

This position creates intricate and detailed mechanical drawings that include assemblies, sub-assemblies, parts, detail views, and section views. The EDG supervisor will check to provide feedback on design changes, tolerances, work processes and drafting standards.

• Generate moderately difficult 3D models including written direction and instructions.
• Prepare various drawings of such units as knowledge capture facility assemblies, drafts of new mechanical designs, IRAD hardware, large billet cutting plans, and specimens.
• Provide calculations and measurements of mechanical equipment to fellow project team members. Examples of calculations can include compute weights, center of gravity, load capacities, dimensions, quantities of material, etc.
• Develop knowledge of PDM administration.
• Establish the practice of adhering to drawing standards of ASME 14.5 & 14.1.
• Utilize GD & T through drawing incorporation.
• Prepare design drawings to develop ideas generated by engineers with verbal guidance only.
• Generate engineering drawings and related data to manufacture parts and equipment.
• Utilize knowledge of drawings and 3d models to complete production drawings.
• Interface with the machine shop to implement the machining of hardware and related specimen items.
• Measure then create drawings of existing test facilities.
• Support material tracking efforts through application and knowledge of material cutting plans.
• Provide CAD support for related tasks such as proposals, presentations, and conceptual ideas.
• Use PDM software to manage all aspects of Work Orders & ECOs, including tracking all records.Share knowledge of PDM with engineering and other team members of the group.
  
  

Position Specific

• Use reports to independently maintain a balance of project work, IRAD, assemblies and proposals.
• Continue to develop knowledge of GD & T, ASME standards, document management and drafting software.
• Manage multiple projects with moderate guidance while meeting time requirements.
• Coordinate and self-start large, assigned projects.
• Help create multiple assemblies throughout the year for existing and new equipment in the shop.
• Must participate in the design of prototype equipment or special modifications to existing instrumentation or machinery.
• Handle moderately complex issues and problems with little to no guidance.
• Will provide coaching and mentoring to other drafters.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications

• US Citizenship required.
• Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET.
• Associate degree or Certification in CAD plus 6+ years of relevant work experience.
• Demonstrated moderate knowledge/experience with SolidWorks.
• Working knowledge of document management software PDM.
• Ability to utilize advanced drafting and CAD techniques.
• Working knowledge of the terms and procedures of the occupation.
• Capable of independently managing workload and job functions when proficiency has been achieved.
• Good communication skills.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• SolidWorks PDM Administration training.
• GD&T Training.
• Designing with form, fit and function.

This position involves work in an office and laboratory environment and could require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including:

Physical Demands

In performing the work for this position, the designer must be able to:

• Perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
• Sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
• Climb ladders and stairs in performing the work.
  
  

Travel

Minimal domestic travel may be required.
