Brief description of the division A combination of conflict and insecurity extreme weather events caused by climate change and economic shocks continues to predispose the most vulnerable communities around the world to acute food insecurity and malnutrition. This means that today in 2024 across 15 crisis-affected countries approximately 108 million people are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity and 33 million children suffer from wasting of which more than 9 million are suffering from severe wasting the most life-threatening form of child addition in 2022 there were at least 7 million malnourished pregnant and breastfeeding women and adolescent girls across the same priority countries. UNICEF and WFP are taking forward a new collaborative approach to support governments in addressing wasting in food-insecure humanitarian settings transforming how both agencies operate. UNICEF and WFP will work in unison with government and partners to provide a timely effective and sustained response to prevent and treat wasting in the same alignment with the new WHO Guideline UNICEF and WFP with support from USAID / BHA are implementing a three-year transition plan () focused on 15 countries with high-burden contexts. The plan represents UNICEF and WFP efforts to reduce child wasting in humanitarian contexts in line with the Global Action Plan for Child Wasting (the GAP). The plan is being taken forward in three phases. The first phase front runner countries (Haiti Kenya Madagascar Nigeria and South Sudan) started transitioning to the new way of working in late 2024. The second group (Burkina Faso Chad the Democratic Republic of Congo Ethiopia Mali Niger and Sudan) in 2025 while the third group (Afghanistan Somalia and Yemen) will do so in 2026. UNICEF and WFP country teams will work with governments to lead the change. Job purpose The overall purpose of this assignment is to support the WFP contribution of the joint transition plan of child wasting towards its intended outcomes by supporting learning sharing and communicating across WFP as well as with key UNICEF counterparts. General information Number of available positions : 1 Country of assignment : Italy City of assignment : Rome Hiring Unit : Nutrition and Food Quality service Supervisor : Wasting Transition Plan Coordinator Working arrangement : In person Duration of assignment : 6 months Expected Starting Date : September 2025 Responsibilities Duties and responsibilities The Support Fellow will support the coordination and management of the joint transition plan on child wasting to ensure that respective country offices are effectively supported and expected results across agreed areas of collaboration are achieved. This includes : Support the establishment and maintenance of project management tools and workspaces ensuring that they are up-to-date and fit for purpose so that teams have relevant information of what is happening and how the joint transition plan is progressing. This includes tools such as the joint calendar the transition plan snapshot and the internal and joint filing systems. Support the Transition Plan Coordinator in the setting of meetings taking of notes and recaps to be shared with the Wasting Transition Team. Data visualization and aggregation of information to inform regular updates and reporting. Support on programme and policy mapping and development of communication products for the 15 country offices. Spearhead and support the learning and sharing spaces for the transition plan bringing together stakeholders from headquarters regional bureaus and country offices. This will include : Kicking off a remote learning and sharing webinar series including brainstorming ideas with key people developing of a short concept note outlining the details with a tentative plan for the first 6 months and then preparing and supporting each session. Support the planning preparation and implementation of an in-person event for all 15 countries involved in the Joint UNICEF-WFP Approach. Support any other activities related to the Joint UNICEF-WFP Approach and its objectives as required. Qualifications Standard minimum qualifications Be an undergraduate or masters student or a graduate in nutrition Public Health Food Security Food systems or other related fields Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency / level C). Working knowledge of another official UN language (French Spanish Arabic Chinese Russian plus Portuguese) is an asset. Some experience with organizing and presenting complex information for easy uptake and use. Some experience in arranging effective and interesting in-person and on-line events. Strong communication and partnership skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in multicultural settings. Supervision Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Wasting Transition Plan Coordinator the Fellow would have both collaborative pieces of work as well as independent one with opportunities for interaction with the Child Wasting and Maternal Nutrition Team. Training components Throughout their assignment WFP Fellows have access to an industry leading learning platform weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds he / she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars as appropriate. Learning elements At the end of the assignment the Fellow should : Learn about programming for the prevention and management of wasting in children under 5 and undernutrition in women in humanitarian contexts the standards the breadth of the package key considerations when developing country specific packages and where evidence is still needed to inform programming. Have a view of the context and nutrition programming within the 15 countries that make up the Transition Plan including interaction with key staff within each of these humanitarian contexts. Learn about partnerships particularly between UNICEF and WFP but also others and the importance for effective programming. Obtain an understanding of the nutrition in emergencies network and architecture and establish working relationships within it. Have exposure to donors grant requirements proposals and reporting following through the full project cycle. Have opportunities to learn about key areas of the transition plan that are part of the strategic shifts including nutrition information systems; how analytics supports programme decisions and design; monitoring evaluation research and learning; social behaviour changes components; supply chain; and others.
