Job Description
Key Responsibilities Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on locomotives according to company guidelines and checklists. Diagnose mechanical issues by observing equipment in operation, listening for irregularities, and using precision measuring tools. Dismantle devices using hoists, cranes, hand and power tools to access and replace defective parts. Inspect, measure, and adjust components to meet dimensional requirements. Operate grinders, metalworking tools, welding, and cutting equipment to fabricate or repair parts. Record locomotive hour meter readings and perform fluid sampling (lube oil, cooling water, etc.). Clean, service, and replace filters, strainers, spark arrestor traps, and lubrication systems. Conduct brake and safety equipment tests. Inspect wheels, trucks, fuel tanks, brakes, handrails, steps, hoses, clamps, fire extinguishers, and other critical systems. Drain and service fuel tanks, reservoirs, and retention tanks as required. Time injectors and valves, set racks, check turbo backlash, and perform bearing checks. Carry out electrical maintenance and modifications where required. Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and heavy lifting equipment safely. Complete documentation, inspection reports, and sign-offs accurately. Requirements Education & Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalent. 36 months of mechanical experience (locomotive/rail experience preferred) OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical Skills: Proficiency with hand tools (screwdrivers, torque wrenches, callipers, micrometres, pry bars). Skilled in using power tools (cut-off saws, drills, grinders, impact wrenches). Knowledge of hydraulic tools and equipment (wrenches, barring over tools). Ability to operate welding and cutting tools. Experience with heavy equipment operation (overhead cranes, truck cranes, forklifts). Strong mechanical and electrical maintenance skills. Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and maintenance manuals. Competence in shop mathematics and problem-solving. Physical Demands: Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, twist, climb, and balance regularly. Ability to lift and exert force: Up to 11 kg regularly Up to 25 kg frequently Up to 65 kg occasionally Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Work Environment: Exposure to high noise levels, moving machinery, diesel fumes, oil, grease, and occasionally chemicals. Work may involve confined spaces, elevated platforms, and uneven ground.
