The Sanitation Engineering Advisor is expected to provide engineering supports/advisories on construction, operation and maintenance of Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants along with other engineering support required
for strengthening FSM services in the program areas. The Sanitation Engineering Advisor needs to work collaboratively and constructively with the different partners and is also expected to have a methodical and systematic approach to identifying solutions, implementing and monitoring those for properly documenting the process.

Key Responsibilities

To lead the Treatment, disposal and re-use components of the project in close collaboration with the activities of other components and also contribute to the work of colleagues, by providing the
technically sound advice for activities in the other components. The below are the specific tasks:

Advisory services:

  • Support stakeholder clients in developing and implementing the collection, transportation, treatment, disposal and re-use component

  • Support colleagues in the other components to develop technology upgrading options,
    service options for vulnerable areas, city data management and standards

  • Integrate legal and social information in the search for technical solutions

  • Conduct and support research understanding design criteria for sanitation
    infrastructures and lead the quality construction of any relevant infrastructures

  • Analyze and present different technology scenarios, including costing

  • Design and develop re-use options taking into account profitability, legal aspects as
    well as health and safety.

  • Working with local line agencies to develop standards for key parts of the sanitation value chain

Quality assurance & Knowledge Development
  • Align with knowledge deliverables and quality standards,

  • Ensure implementation of SNV’s monitoring for results framework,

  • Identify and explore replication of good practices,

  • Conduct comparative studies and facilitate horizontal learning to improve practice and

  • Coach, guide and backstop project teams in implementation,

  • Promote knowledge exchange and networking with other SNV regions and externally.

Co-ordination & Programme Management
  • Ensure performance of component, corresponding to plans and targets,

  • Facilitate and coordinate interaction with other sector stakeholders,

  • Contribute to the SNV WASH knowledge activities.

  • Establish and maintain linkage with national and international knowledge centres.

  • Take part in national and regional events as appropriate,

  • Support content development for external communications.

  • Contribute to managing and implementing partnerships

Job Requirements:


  • Masters in engineering with specialization in WASH or related field.

  • At least 10 years of experience in water supply and sanitation, or waste water
    management in public and/or private sector which at least  5-7 years’ experience in sanitation

  • Strong interest in re-use of human waste, experience in this area is an asset

  • Proven track record of relating technical and social solution in sanitation.

  • Creative, practical and systematic professional

  • Evidence of producing knowledge products (publications and other).

  • Flexibility to handle varied and demanding tasks and ability to balance priorities, thrive
    under pressure and juggle a multitude of details in a fast-paced environment

  • Significant experience in developing and managing complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives
    directly delivering change.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as member of a team, and to be flexible to
    accommodate the needs of stakeholders.

  • Ability to lead the assignment and the team with remote supervision.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills both in English and Bangla

Additional Information

Duty station:                    Jessore with frequent travel to other program areas

Contract Duration:            This is a fixed term position for 3 years.

Expected Joining Date:     As soon as possible latest by 1st March 2018

Working Hours:                Full time (minimum of 40 hours per week)
