Position Summary

The Alexion Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a therapeutic area expert who is self-driven and passionate about sharing Alexion's science, keen to spend the majority of their time in field and thrives when working in a highly flexible and dynamic environment. This role supports both pre-commercial and commercial Alexion therapies in Victoria, Australia.


The position operates within a broad matrix structure and will require regular interaction with regional account managers and office based cross functional teams


This position requires a willingness to approach both strategy and tactics with enthusiasm and a can do attitude.


Principal Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain peer-to-peer collaborations and relationships with key medical experts in relevant therapeutic areas within the assigned geographic region.
  • Collaborate with physicians and drive medical affairs initiatives aligned to medical strategy including publications, investigator sponsored research (ISR), advisory boards, medical education opportunities, training and speaker development programs.
  • Key Opinion Leader management, strategic engagement and development, through cross-functional collaboration with Sales & Marketing, Regulatory Affairs, & Clinical Operations functional groups.
  • Serve as scientific peer-to-peer resource to disease experts in applicable therapeutic area. Support and provide the medical community with up-to-date medical information, robust disease expertise and product information.
  • Communicate expert opinions and feedback from the field on new data to Alexion Medical Affairs and therapeutic area franchises.
  • Provide medical and scientific input into the planning, execution and agenda content of advisory boards and work with physician experts to review speaker presentations and provide medical references where requested. Provide post meeting analysis and implementation of actions aligned to strategic objectives.
  • Respond to unsolicited medical information requests, manage and respond to questions and liaise with headquarters personnel to ensure proper response has been provided and that data is fair and balanced.
  • Review and assessment of Investigator Sponsored Research (ISR) and medical grant proposals to determine alignment and serve as conduit for respective projects. Liaise with Health Care Professionals (HCPs) regarding application process & suitability and ongoing milestone assessments.
  • Support / conduct internal and external clinical initiatives including presentation of final approved data to improve therapeutic area understanding and support medical strategies.
  • Serve as internal expert in specific therapeutic area demonstrating up-to-date and high level therapeutic expertise. As required train Alexion staff on key scientific and medical topics in relevant therapeutic area.
  • Support the development and drive implementation of a local Medical Affairs Plan and strategy which supports best clinical practice and the overall corporate objectives
  • Support and implement the Brand and Affiliate Company Strategy to ensure that accurate and comprehensive scientific information concerning Alexion products is available to decision makers and healthcare provider’s e.g. attend field-based calls alongside commercial colleagues, where Medical Affairs expertise is required
  • Deliver quality medical education presentations in a variety of settings and obtain valuable feedback that can be disseminated throughout the organization e.g. Staff Meetings, Round Tables, Hospital Meeting activities in collaboration with the commercial field-based staff
  • Ensure timely and informative scientific/medical exchanges with external customers and internal partners, which accurately reflect scientific data, in accordance with compliance policies and procedures as well as with legal and ethical standards
  • Support the implementation of medical affairs practices to assess new indications, the treating community, patient pathways, diagnostic practices and management strategies in relevant  disease areas
  • Develop and maintain an effective collaborative working relationship with the wider matrix team, including commercial field based team.
  • Solicit and share best practices to enhance team productivity.
  • Attend appropriate national and international meetings and congresses to gather intelligence, assist personal education, and utilize these opportunities to develop relationships with important thought leaders
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant internal SOPs and external regulations and guidelines.
  • Ensure MSL activities are conducted to high quality standards, delivered on time and within defined budget.
  • Mentoring of new hire MSLs where required.
  • Other duties upon request including special projects.




  • Minimum post graduate qualifications in relevant applied life science degree essential. PhD, Masters Medical Science preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years pharmaceutical industry experience, preferably within medical / clinical development functions
  • Proven experience in a customer facing role within the pharmaceutical industry
  • Strong ability to manage multiple projects across functional areas, and work independently when appropriate, in teams and as a sub-team lead, and drive projects to meet objectives in a timely manner
  • Flexible and comfortable with ambiguity
  • Strong analytical skills and commercial acumen
  • Experience in hematology or nephrology markets is highly regarded although not mandatory
  • Rare and Ultra Rare experience highly regarded
  • Life science degree
